There is an interesting article on the NewScientist (Magazine issue 2642). It says that year 2008 could be the starting point or Year Zero for real time travels. As in this year the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) - the most powerful atom-smasher ever built - will be switched on. This is expected to be the first step towards time travel and LHC could be world's first time machine!
